Telegram Faces Restrictions in Multiple Countries

Iran Banned Telegram in 2018
Iran was once one of Telegram’s largest markets, with millions of active users relying on the platform for communication and information sharing.
According to reports, Iranian authorities permanently blocked Telegram in 2018 following anti-government protests. Officials claimed that the app was being used to coordinate demonstrations and distribute protest-related content across the country.
China Has Restricted Telegram Since 2015
China has maintained restrictions on Telegram since 2015 under its extensive internet censorship framework, commonly referred to as the “Great Firewall.”
Chinese authorities have long viewed Telegram with suspicion due to its popularity among activists, lawyers, and political organizers. The app gained additional attention during the 2019 Hong Kong protests, where demonstrators reportedly used Telegram to coordinate activities and share updates.
Brazil Has Temporarily Suspended Telegram
Unlike China and Iran, Brazil has not imposed a permanent ban on Telegram. However, the platform has faced multiple temporary suspensions.
Brazilian courts have previously accused Telegram of failing to comply with judicial orders related to misinformation, extremist content, and criminal investigations. As a result, the platform has periodically faced service disruptions in the country.
Other Countries That Have Restricted Telegram
Several other nations have also taken action against Telegram at different times.
Thailand blocked access to Telegram in 2020 after pro-democracy protesters used the platform for communication and coordination.
Cuba restricted Telegram during anti-government demonstrations in 2021 as authorities attempted to control the flow of information.
Pakistan has also imposed restrictions on Telegram on various occasions, citing cybersecurity concerns and the spread of misinformation.

Telegram’s encrypted communication features, large public channels, and massive group capacities have made it one of the world’s most influential messaging platforms.
