Snana Purnima 2026

Puri is all set to celebrate Snana Purnima 2026, one of the most sacred festivals in the Jagannath tradition, on June 29, 2026. Also known as Deba Snana Purnima or Snana Yatra, the festival marks the first public appearance of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra before the world ahead of the annual Rath Yatra.

Thousands of devotees from across India are expected to gather at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri to witness the grand rituals, including the ceremonial bathing of the deities with 108 pitchers of sanctified water, the majestic Hati Besha, and the beginning of the sacred Anasara period.

What Is Snana Purnima?

Snana Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha. It is considered one of the most important rituals in the Jagannath tradition because it marks the only annual occasion when the sibling deities are brought out of the sanctum sanctorum and placed on the Snana Mandap for public darshan.

The festival also serves as the spiritual beginning of the rituals leading up to the world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra.

Sacred Bath with 108 Pitchers

The highlight of Snana Purnima 2026 is the Jala Bije ritual, during which the deities are bathed with 108 pitchers of holy water collected from the sacred Suna Kua inside the temple complex.

The water is purified according to temple traditions and mixed with sandalwood paste, fragrant herbs and flowers before being offered to the deities. In Hindu philosophy, the number 108 represents completeness, divine energy and cosmic harmony, making the ritual deeply symbolic.

Before the bathing ceremony, traditional rituals including Mangala Arati, Dwaralagi, Pushpanjali, and the grand Pahandi Bije procession are performed as the deities are ceremonially carried from the Ratna Singhasana to the Snana Mandap amid devotional chants of Jai Jagannath.

Hati Besha: The Elephant Attire

After the ceremonial bath, Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra appear in the famous Hati Besha, also known as Gaja Besha, while Goddess Subhadra is decorated with a beautiful lotus-themed ornamentation.

According to temple tradition, the ritual is associated with the story of Pandit Ganapati Bhatta, a devotee of Lord Ganesha who visited Puri centuries ago. It is believed that Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra manifested in the form of Lord Ganesha to bless the devotee, giving rise to the annual tradition of Hati Besha.

The attire is also considered an auspicious invocation of Lord Ganesha’s blessings before the commencement of the Rath Yatra.

Anasara Period Begins

Following the Hati Besha ritual, the deities are moved to the Anasara Ghar, where they remain away from public view for approximately 15 days.

Temple tradition believes that after receiving the ceremonial bath, the deities develop a divine fever and undergo Ayurvedic treatment during this period. Since devotees cannot see the original deities, they worship sacred painted representations known as Patti Dian, which symbolize Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra.

The deities make their public return during Netrotsav, also called Nava Jaubana Darshan, just before the Rath Yatra begins.

Tight Security for Snana Purnima 2026

Authorities have implemented extensive security and crowd management arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival.

Nearly 79 platoons of police personnel have been deployed across Puri. Security measures include CCTV surveillance, dedicated response teams, anti-snatching squads, traffic regulation, crowd control barricades and emergency response units to manage the large number of devotees expected during the celebration.

Devotees will enter the temple through the Singhadwara, while general darshan inside the shrine will remain temporarily suspended until the completion of the major rituals.

Spiritual Significance of Snana Purnima

Snana Purnima is regarded as a festival of purification, devotion and renewal. The sacred bathing ceremony symbolizes cleansing of the divine forms before the grand Rath Yatra and reminds devotees of the values of humility, compassion and spiritual transformation.

The festival also marks the beginning of a sacred sequence of rituals that culminates in the globally celebrated Jagannath Rath Yatra, attracting millions of pilgrims every year.
