A French court has sentenced Dahabia Benkirane to life in prison, the harshest sentence, for the rape and murder of 12-year-old Lola Daviet in Paris. This is the first time in French history that a woman has been given such a sentence.
Lola’s body was found in a plastic container outside her apartment building in October 2022. Authorities said the girl’s throat had been slit and numbers such as “1” and “0” were written on her feet.
According to reports, Dahabia Benkirane invited Lola to his apartment and raped, tortured and then suffocated her to death with duct tape.
Benkirane apologized for his mistake in court, saying, “I apologize, what I did is terrible. I have nothing more to say.”
According to local media, during the investigation, it was found that CCTV footage was also found of Dahabia Benkirane carrying the container containing Lola’s body. A few minutes after carrying the container, she stopped at a cafe and a man asked, “What’s in this?” to which Benkirane replied, “A kidney.”
A few hours later, when news of the girl’s body spread in the city, the man told the police the whole incident.
Lola’s mother said after the court’s verdict, “This verdict cannot bring our Lola back, but we have got justice and that is the biggest satisfaction.”
